The Spoils of War is located in Verona, Virginia. The company is owned by Theodore G. Shuey in conjunction with American Art & Antiques. The Spoils of War was started in 2001 like many military collecting businesses. It was a hobby that continued to grow until opening a retail store became inevitable. After many years of collecting, Mr. Shuey decided that his interest in militaria had grown beyond personal collecting and warranted the beginning of an outlet to share his passion and enthusiasm for all things military with the general public.
However, the Spoils of War quickly grew into a full time business and in late 2001 Barent Parslow was hired to help with the day to day operations. Mr. Parslow is retired from the United States Army and brings substantial knowledge of military items, particularly firearms to the operation. Mr. Parslow also serves on the 116th Infantry Regiment Foundation and is an avid supporter of preserving history through education and conservation.
In 2003, the overwhelming success of the Spoils of War led to the hiring of another employee. Howard Putnam was hired due to his extensive knowledge of militaria. His expertise and knowledge, plus his reputation among military collectors worldwide, made him the clear choice to help substantiate the Spoils of War as a premier militaria collecting destination. Mr. Putnam has been an avid collector of militaria for over 30 years. Beginning early in his childhood, Mr. Putnam was fascinated with military artifacts and began to use his allowance to purchase anything relating to military history. Today, Mr. Putnam is still a huge collector with special emphasis on US patches, German Daggers, Headgear and Iron Crosses.
During the summer of 2008, the Spoils of War underwent a major renovation
and expansion. Now completed, the Spoils of War provides collectors
with the largest militaria gallery in Virginia and throughout much
of the East with over 3,000 square feet of retail space. The gallery
is divided into specific time periods covering all major American
conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the present day Global War on Terrorism.
It features historically accurate military figures, a media experience
of classic war movies, and finally a small showroom specifically dedicated
to the 29th Infantry Division.
All employees and friends of the Spoils of War continue to scour antique shops, auctions, flea markets, and yard sales to find unique military artifacts to add to their collections and to offer the many customers of the Spoils of War. We also know many veterans or their families and often buy directly from them. Rest assured that our items are 100% authentic unless they are clearly marked as reproductions. Any reproduction item we carry is on consignment, as it is not our intent to ever purchase reproduction militaria.
At the current time, the Spoils of War cannot keep up with demand. Almost all items that come into the shop are sold within weeks. Therefore, we do not offer an online inventory. If you are looking for that special item or collect certain militaria, please let us know. As with all of our customers, we will let you know if we find an item we feel you would be interested in obtaining for your unique collections.
From all of us, thank you for continuing to make the Spoils of War such a success. Your support allows all of us at the Spoils of War to continue our passion for preserving history. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, comments, or if we can be of any assistance to you.
